Women who influence change, practice and policy
A thought piece by Brea Attrill
This international women’s day I want to reflect on women who influence change, practice and policy. The women who are showing up to educate, voicing views on what is right and driving change. More importantly the ones who are inspiring and educating me on my own journey from a personal and career perspective.
It has to start with Emmeline Pankhurst without her we wouldn’t have the right to vote or to speak about politics, let alone influence change. It was the biggest step in equality between men and women, although even in 2024 we still have a lot to learn in the relationship of equals.
When asked to do this I thought about the women who have educated me recently. I reflected on media posts I have saved, podcasts I’ve listened to, reports I have read and campaigns I have followed. I don’t know any of these women personally, but their work or views have inspired me. These are my words, for the women who I think deserve recognition on International Women’s Day 2024.
Emily Konstantas and Della Wright – For the monumental campaign and groundbreaking safeguarding legislation ‘Dellas Law’. Della, for your bravery and voice. Emily, for the work The Safeguarding Alliance do in driving forward culture change.
Maggie Oliver – For tirelessly fighting and advocating for survivors for many years. Continuing to do so because despite the independent review now being published, there is still no individuals being held accountable for the offence they committed whilst in a position of trust/power.
Carrie Bower – I have recently discovered ‘Know Your Place’ and ‘Let’s Get Visible Podcast’ which is incredibly educating and informative around domestic abuse in older women. I tend to find myself learning from her in this area.
Janine Green – Needs no introduction if you’re in the housing world, if I am even in doubt or need any sort of ASB or community safety guidance or advice it is the first place I go.
Lorna Warriner – Very new discovery for me, now I am obsessed! Her views and practice in mental capacity field is of real interest to me and I am excited to learn more.
My message is to encourage and celebrate each other, learn from one another and positively empower each other. In a world where we are still faced with challenges and injustices just for being women, support each other! There are so many more incredible women who I haven’t mentioned, I haven’t forgotten you either.
“There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish” – Michelle Obama
